Sam fisted a tear away from her cheek and dropped her head back down onto the pillow. Poor Cam. She'd awakened expecting to see one person, and instead there was Cam and his bag of macaroons. She knew he could tell she was disappointed, but he hung in there and tried to cheer her up.

This had been a close call. She really thought she'd never make it back, never see…She stifled a sob, and reached for a tissue, blowing her nose and sniffling. That was all she could think about at the time, she was never going to see him again. Then, to wake up in the infirmary, and he wasn't there. A whimper escaped her. He was ALWAYS there when she woke up in the infirmary. Always. After Jolinar, after the entity, after the Super Soldier nearly got her, after the Prometheus incident. Always.

Not this time.

This just highlighted to her how much things had changed. Janet was gone, Dad was gone. Her heart clenched at the thought, at the memory of them. General Hammond was retired, Catherine was gone. Emerson had been killed before her eyes, the people of Abydos all gone. God knew where Daniel was and how he was doing. Poor Vala, she was lost without him. Sam would never admit it, but she even missed McKay a little. And he, Jack, was in Washington, rarely to be heard from. She'd heard he'd gone to Atlantis, but she hadn't been there to see him come through the SGC. They were like strangers now. Just people who USED to work together. He probably didn't even know she'd been injured, didn't know how close it had come to being the end for her. She wondered if he'd even care.

Sam lay back and felt a tear run out of her eye and into her hairline. She didn't bother to wipe it away. Everything seemed so dark and, yes, a little hopeless right now.

"Colonel Carter?" It was one of the nurses holding a vase with a beautiful bouquet of mixed flowers. "This is for you." She placed the vase on the table next to Sam, gave her a small smile and left.

Sam stared at the flowers. They were beautiful. She reached for the card attached and as she read the note, the tears started anew:

"Carter, as far as you're concerned, I'm right there next to you, got that? Keep that thought until I get there. I'm on my way."

It wasn't signed, but suddenly she felt a whole lot better. She sighed and lay back against the pillows again.

As she drifted off to sleep she thought maybe she'd give Cam's macaroons another try.
