Challenge: HSWW - Assignment #1 - Ancient Runes - Task 1

Prompt: write about someone having a moment of genius, or perfect clarity of thought.

Pansy woke up feeling cold in bed but she couldn't comprehend why. She had never felt this way before even though she had been living in the same apartment for the past four years, even though the Slytherin dungeon was far worse by comparison. Her magically heated blanket should've been enough to keep her warm, just as it always has. She didn't want to rouse from her slumber into the cold world, instead preferring to fall back into the depths of lifelessness; but the delicious scent of breakfast cooking was enough to get her out of bed.

In her half-dazed state, she followed her nose to the source of the ambrosial aroma. It led her through their bedroom doorway, nearly stumbling over their coffee table along the way.

Through half-lidded eyes, she could make out the silhouette of a person standing in her kitchen. A smile graced her face as she recognized who it was – her girlfriend Daphne Greengrass. Quietly she moved up behind the body and slid her arms around the slender torso.

With a jolt, Daphne turned around. "Who-… Oh, you woke up. Merlin's beard Pans, you scared me."

Pansy hummed softly in response. "Hmm..."

"And why are you naked? It's dangerous to-" Pansy cut her off with a kiss. Daphne tried to disentangle herself from the embrace, but the sweet taste of her girlfriend's lips was too much for her to handle. After half a minute, her brain was too weak to resist anymore and she responded fervently; the burning pan of scrambled eggs forgotten in the background.

Suddenly Pansy pushed her off and just stared down at her own feet. "I understand now" she mumbled to her dazed and puzzled girlfriend.

"What? What do you understand?" Daphne whispered back; now starting to get a little worried.

Pansy lifted her head back up and stared into Daphne's eyes. "Now I understand why I was feeling cold."

Giving her girlfriend a once-over, Daphne raised an eyebrow. "I think the question you should be asking is – Why wouldn't you feel cold?"

"No, it's not that. Before you moved in with me a few weeks ago, I would always sleep alone in my bed with the same blanket and heating charm we use; and I never felt cold inside my blanket. Today, I woke up feeling colder than I ever have, even though none of that had changed. The only thing that has changed is you; and after hugging you I can confirm that it is you."

Pansy gripped her teary-eyed girlfriend's arms even tighter. "You are the source of warmth in me and without you I feel very cold and lifeless. I love you, Daphne Greengrass."

Daphne was overjoyed at her girlfriend's words; this was one of the few times the usually cold and aloof Slytherin expressed her feelings about their relationship. With matching smiles, the pair fell back into another heated kiss; only to get broken up once again by the smell of burning eggs.

"Fuck!" They groaned simultaneously, before Daphne quickly removed the spell and disposed their spoiled breakfast.

Sorry about the long hiatus on all of my stories. I had to take some time off to focus on my job interviews. (I got the job I wanted!)

Now, I'll slowly be updating on all of my unfinished multichaps as well as focusing on a bunch of new stories during my free semester.

Please let me know what you think in a review.
