AN: This is the first of my Twilight 25 posts. For this round, we were asked to choose a central character who would be involved in every post. I chose Esme – partially for the challenge of writing a character I haven't written before, and partially because I think she is so often portrayed one-dimensionally. She is the quintessential mother figure. But a lot of us in the fandom are mothers – life didn't start for us with the birth of our children and it doesn't revolve completely around them now. So this is an opportunity Esme to stretch her wings a bit.

Now that this Author's Note is longer than the actual story, let us commence!

There she is again.

She's wearing a simple t-shirt and shorts. Not the tiny shorts her friends are sporting; these things nearly reach her knees. She's what my mother would call modest. Demure.

How is it that her modesty sets me aflame?

My fingers itch to peel away each layer; my eyes yearn to explore every tantalizingly hidden curve. More, I want to learn every inch of her mind, to discover what makes her so different from her friends with their blatantly displayed charms.

I gather my courage.

"Hi, I'm Carlisle."

"I'm Esme."

My world ignites with her shy smile.

AN: There are a couple of different definitions of demure on the internet. I went with the Oxford English Dictionary.

Demure: (of a woman or her behaviour) reserved, modest and shy.
