Meh, Jane thought as she was going through some of her old stuff from 2nd year. There were loads of letters and scribbled notes. She stared at the letter sitting open in her lap. It was from Sirius. She hadn't spoken to him since he had broken her heart at the end of their 2nd year. After that she had spent every holiday at Lilly's house or at Hogwarts, unless Sirius was sure to be absent.
"Jane?" Lilly asked coming to sit next to her. "Are you alright?"
"I was out on the front line, doin' just fine," Jane said weakly. "I'd put it all behind me…'til I came across a letter from an old flame asking me how I've been."
"Jane," Lilly said hugging Jane tightly. "It stopped you dead in your tracks?"
"And shot me back there to second year," She sobbed.
"Jane?" Sirius' voice came as if from a great distance. His eyes fell to the letter in her hands and he swallowed a lump in his throat. "It was me and you."
"What am I supposed to say?" Jane asked looking up at him with teary eyes.
"Jane I'm--" Sirius began but she cut him off angrily.
"I hope I don't fall head over heals," She snapped tears still streaming down her face. "Cause I know how it's gonna feel, and I don't think I could live through you again."
"Jane please," He pleaded.
"So don't, don't, don't," She said looking away from his chocolate brown puppy eyes.
"Jane Let it be love," Sirius said grabbing her by the shoulders. "It hurts a lot, like it or not."
"If it comes to Love or freedom, it won't be love," Jane said icily brushing his hands off of her. She went stomping up to the girls dorm with Lilly tailing right behind her.
"Jane!" Lilly said.
"I know I should know better," Jane groaned. Mane I hate this stuff. Don't let it be love. "Let's think," Lilly said trying to calm her down.
"I'm in the front line and on the drop line," Jane said .
"So fill me in!" Lilly snapped trying to make sense of what Jane was saying.
"Bash me over the head," Jane said flopping over onto her pillow. "Sometimes I wish I was dead."
"Time heals everything," Lilly said softly. She felt bad for Jane. Jane hadn't been the same since Sirius had hurt her. She was broken and it seemed like no one could help her. "At least that's what I've read."
"Here we go again," Jane scoffed rolling her eyes. "I'm head over heals and I know how it's gonna feel when it crashes and it burns. It'll be too much."
"So don't let it be love," Lilly snapped. Jane needed to get over this if she was ever going to be normal again.
"And if I ever hear that voice again I just might kill someone," Jane said.
"NOT LITERALL!" Lilly shouted shocked.
"Of course not…but the thought has crossed my mind," Jane said smiling at her. "So don't let it be love, I'm much better with Wham! Bam! Thank you Ma'am."
"No you're not Jane," Lilly said.
"Jane please let's talk," Sirius pleaded through the girl's dormitory door. "It's been 3 YEARS! Can't we at least be friends again?"
"Friends." Jane said opening the door. "Just friends and nothing else."
"Ok…it's a start," Sirius said relieved.
