A folder sits on the piano. The tab on the thick folder says Bishop, Josephine.
Olivia grabs it before she can think not to. The suspicions roiling in the back of her mind demand quieting. Or if she's being really honest with herself, she's curious for personal reasons.
Either way, she stuffs the file in her tote and tries not to look guilty.
At home that night, she leaves the file on the coffee table. She makes a pot of tea; she has the feeling she might need it. Once it's done, she takes a cup back to the living room and sits down to read.
Two hours later, she carefully pulls two items out of the folder. In her photograph, Josephine Bishop looks young and fragile. But there's a stubborn set to her chin, and even in print her eyes spark with determination.
The sheath of medical charts beneath the photograph are committed to Olivia's formidable memory, whether she wants them to be or not. She'd rather they not be. Yet when she closes her eyes, words dance against the dark. Infertility. Request. Genetic manipulation.
She's fairly certain this is what Walter asked her to keep from Peter. Olivia's eyes snap open. She looks at the file, so now like a snake curled up and hissing on the table. Was it left for her to find? And if so, left by whom?
Two cups of tea later and she still has no solid idea, only a nebulous feeling of complicity.
