Tomorrow
Inara was going to leave Mal tomorrow. She was. Even told him so. She'd told him straight up, to his face, that she'd had enough of him. He was impossible to be around in any capacity, and she'd gotten far too tired of attempting and failing to live with his insufferableness. So she wasn't going to anymore.
She was going to leave him tomorrow. She was. She'd informed him of her departure. The business she'd come aboard Serenity to conduct was now too difficult (impossible, really) to maintain. So she was going to pack her suitcases and leave Serenity. It was time for her to go.
She was going to leave him tomorrow. She was going to leave them all. The whole crew. It was simply time for her to move on. She'd been here too long. It was time to plant herself elsewhere where she might do some good. Have some change. Moving on was natural. It was the right thing to do. So she was going to do it.
She was going to leave him tomorrow. Things were on a dangerous edge. They both knew it, even if neither dared say a word about it. Inara didn't want to fall over that edge, plummeting to ruination below. She couldn't stand it. So for her safety – not for his, because she didn't care about his; that was his own fault – she was going to leave.
She was going to leave him tomorrow. It was a threatening whisper, uttered without thought, but it wasn't an empty threat. Her mind was wholly reserved to follow through on that threat. She was going to leave tomorrow, so he'd better enjoy what little time he had left with her.
She was going to leave him tomorrow. She really was. Things weren't working out and it was just getting too painful for her to bear. She couldn't hold up any longer. So she was going to leave. Not run away from the pain, but set herself free from it. It was right to do in this situation.
Inara was going to leave him tomorrow. She said she was. But then again, that was the same thing she'd said yesterday.
THE END
