"At least it's not your bowling hand."Max scowled at his bandaged (left) hand. "Yeah, that's really not making me feel better, Danny." He was relieved that the fracture (which was just a minor one the doctor had assured him, and as long as he had lots of rest he'd better in no time, really) wasn't going to ruin his beginning pro bowling career... but that didn't mean that he was going to be happy about it, either.
If Danny had noticed the verbal barb he didn't let it show as he rummaged through the prescription bag. "I told you that moving those shelves by yourself was a bad idea."
It was bad enough that his hand was broken-- did he really need Danny (of all people) scolding him? "Sorry that I wanted to help you with the move during your busy week at work."
Max really hated to admit it, but a part of him was very satisfied with watching Danny's face fall. "I'm sorry. I guess... when I heard that crash I was so scared..."
Any sense of satisfaction was long gone as he reached out for Danny with his good hand. You would think that after being together for nearly a year he'd remember how easily Danny's feelings could be hurt...
"Sorry. I guess the pain in my hand is making me grouchy."
He felt relief go through him when Danny smiled again. "You'll feel better once you get some rest-- which you will be, by the way."
Danny had to be joking. "I have practice tonight! It's not like I have to stay in bed--"
"But the doctor said you shouldn't do anything too strenuous. As far as I'm concerned, driving across town so you can practice for hours on end falls into that category-- and your teammates would agree with me."
Max scowled. Again. "I'm guessing that means that you've already called them and said I'd be out tonight?"
Danny smiled and nodded as he handed Max some vitamins. He glanced at the label-- it was called 'Wada Calcium CD3' or something like that. "Here, take this. I'll help to make sure you heal okay." Max was about to protest that he could take care of himself... but then Danny kissed him, soft and slow.
"You just get some rest, Max. I'm going to make dinner."
Max watched him as he disappeared into the kitchen. Suddenly, being stuck at home didn't seem so bad anymore.
