Kate had locked up her feelings since that day. Locked them up in an air tight box and shrouded them in darkness. Away from her own questioning and confused thoughts.
So when he utters those three words again, not once but twice, she just can't keep the psychological lid closed any longer.
"Because I love you..."
Her feelings are prying their way out with all they have and she can tell they won't let up. They are itching to break free, have been given the opportunity to do so and break free they shall.
"...I love you..."
The words echo in her mind. Left hanging along with his painful expression. The one that crushes her heart.
'I love you too,' is what she wants to say, needs to say. But her mouth has gone dry and her throat has blocked from the tears she's been holding back. Then she remembers - he betrayed her. Kept something this big from her knowing full well how she'd react, the pain it would cause. He did it anyway. But, deep down inside, past all the walls and barriers built to protect herself, she knew it wasn't out of spite or selfishness. It was out of love.
God! How can just three simple words make her feel this way? It's him. Not the words but the one saying them.
Richard bloody Castle. The man-child turned best friend and...what would she call him? 'Partner' just doesn't cut it anymore. Him and his ruggedly handsome good looks and his rapier wit. This one man who could make her weak at the knees with one brush of an innocent hand, send shivers down her spine with just his soft breath against her skin, and could set her whole world alight with those three words spoken in his oh soalluring voice.
"...but you already know that, don't you?"
And then the sudden guilt spreads painfully across her chest. She lied to him and he definitely knows. As much as he has caused her pain, she has done so equally in return. Why couldn't she just man up and admit that she had heard, that she had remembered, that she returned his feelings? Of course she wasn't ready but she could have told him that too, she believes he would have understood, given her the time that she needed. Another reason to love him so dearly.
That pained expression on his face tells her everything she needs to know. No words. They both have kept secrets, both lied at the others expense. But when it comes down to it, he'll be there for her. And, she thinks, she would be there for him too.
Always.
