Haymitch and Effie had just canceled today's lessons.
"I just wish we could go somewhere." said the love of my life, Katniss Everdeen. She was my everything.
"Who says we can't?" I said. I had remembered the roof garden. We packed a picnic, and headed up to the roof. It was sort of a special place for us.
I'd hoped it would be my perfect day. I would have Katniss all to myself. We would have the perfect place- the roof with a wonderful view.
It was my perfect day.
We had a lovely lunch, and even made up this game with an apple, and the force field. Katniss would throw the apple into the field, and I would catch it. Than we would switch. The game was funny to her, and I loved hearing her jingle of a laugh. It reminded me that she was still with me, within my reach.
Throughout the day, I drew her, she practiced her knots with the garden vines. Somehow it ended up with her head in my lap, her making a crown of flowers, and me playing with her hair. I said I was practicing my knots, but I knew she didn't even come close to believing me.
I began to drift away, deep in thought. I tried not to think about the nightmare beyond the roof and my eyes started to glisten. I stopped playing with her hair.
She seemed to notice my pause and quickly spoke up.
"What is it?" she asked.
I thought about it for a moment. I didn't even know what was bothering me. Was it the fact that she and I would be thrown into the deadly arena in a few days? Or was it the fact that I couldn't keep her this time? My luck had run out.
"I wish that I could freeze this moment and stay here forever." I said honestly.
I knew that this response would bother her. I knew that she didn't love me the same way I loved her. Occasionally she would give me hope, but then she would tear down those hopes as soon as she would bring them up.
And then came the hope.
"Okay" she said gently.
I was astonished.
"So you'll allow it?" I said with a smile on my face. She just made me happy.
"I'll allow it." she said, smiling with me.
Then she drifted off into her sleep again. I studied her face. It was another one of those moments where she was amazing and didn't even realize.
The sun was setting and I knew that Katniss wouldn't want to miss it. I shook her gently. She slowly woke.
"I didn't think that you would want to miss it." I said.
"Thanks." she said. I hoped she wasn't mad at me for waking her, but my worry wasn't necessary. She was glad.
I suggested that we head to bed soon. In the words of Effie, we had a big, big, big day ahead of us! She agreed. Somehow, we slipped down to her room without being noticed.
I couldn't help but feel like it was a luxury sleeping next to Katniss. And she genuinely wanted me next to her.
But how would I stay next to her in the arena? How would I protect her? The capitol certainly wouldn't let us win as a pair again.
So here I was, confused and worried. I didn't know anything. I held Katniss closer to me. Oh, well. I still had her, for whatever time we had left together. I knew that.
