Tidal Forces

By Lomeinie

Rating: G (angst)

Spoilers: 'Doomsday' with a dash or two for 'The Runaway Bride'.

Summary: The Doctor returns to the beach at Bad Wolf Bay.

Disclaimers: Oh how I wish I owned the Doctor and 'Doctor Who' but I don't as both belong to the BBC.

Author's Note: Don't ask me where I am getting these Doomsday related pieces from. I guess I am just in a tragic angst-o-rama mood right now.

This takes place just after 'The Runaway Bride'.

In, out.

To, fro.

Back, forth.

After leaving Donna at her parents' home, the Doctor let the TARDIS drift for awhile in the vortex, not knowing where to go next. Then tiring of the vortex he absentmindedly set the coordinates that had taken him to his universe's Bad Wolf Bay. It was a surprise that he did not flee from there but instead stayed to look out over the sea.

For well over an hour, the Doctor watched the tide dance in its eternal cycle.

Only this cycle like everything else isn't eternal, his hearts reminded him in a tone void of any compassion. No, it really wasn't eternal – not when not even a mere two short years ago he had looked on with Rose while the sun burned away the Earth, something that was supposed to have been there forever but was gone in one quick fleeting moment.

Just like she was.

Just like his beautiful Rose.

When the breeze all of a sudden felt chilly on cheeks, the Doctor touched his face, and wasn't surprised with the tears he found there.

In the short time since he lost Rose there had been so many moments the Doctor felt his grief flow mercilessly inwards until his hearts felt as though they'd burst from the onslaught of anguish. Only when he believed he could take no more, the ebb always came to staunch the flow but left him with a nearly equal hollow emptiness in its awake that was as nearly as unbearable as his grief.

Still even if not having Rose with was unbearable, the Doctor knew he had to carry on for her. He knew somehow he had to find a way of living out a fantastic life with the time he had left in the universe. He had wanted no less for her then or no less for her now, and he knew she would want no less than the same for him. Right then after taking a quick glance at the bay, the Doctor started back towards the TARDIS, his mind thinking on where he'd go next, determined to have a fantastic life for Rose.

Footnote 1: I assumed there was a bit of a passage of time between 'The Runaway Bride' and 'Smith and Jones'.
