Emmie looked at Jo like she was the world.
Today she just looked tired.
"Is something the matter?" Jo asked, sitting next to her wife. Hemithea gave a small sigh.
"No."
Red flag number one: Hemithea didn't give any explanation. Usually her answers were followed by 'I didn't sleep well' or 'Georgie started crying late last night' or something like that.
Red flag number two: She was still in her pajamas.
Josephine frowned and looked Hemithea over, then jumped up.
"I want to go on a date!"
Hemithea made an amused half-chuckle, "A date? Really?"
"Of course!"
"Mmm, where to?"
"I was thinking of going to a nice restaurant for lunch, maybe get ice cream and go for a walk afterwards?"
"And what about the kids?"
"They can handle things for a short while."
"Okay," Emmie stood, "I need to get dressed."
The restaurant they went to was small. Neither dressed up too much- they knew they were going to sit outside and it was rather cold- but Jo thought Hemithea looked like a goddess anyway.
"Care to talk about what's wrong, now?"
Hemithea laughed, "Not particularly, no."
"Oh come on!" Josie complained, faking a pout.
"I was just... thinking. I had a bad dream."
"Em-"
"I dreamt about the Waystation and what would happen to it after we die. In the dream it was completely destroyed, as though something or someone was waiting for us to die before... it just got me thinking, is all."
Jo grabbed Emmie's hand and gave a reassuring smile, "Well, we're not going anywhere until Georgie graduates high school. And even then, I'm not planning on going anywhere. Besides, Georgie will looks after it.
I know what your gonna say, maybe she won't live here by then, maybe she moves away, but I know she'll look after the Waystation even then."
Hemithea gave a small, wet laugh and held Jo's hand tighter. Jo almost didn't here her whisper I love you under her breath.
But she did hear.
True to Jo's word, they did get ice cream and went for a walk after they left the restaurant.
They were in a relatively uncrowded area when Hemithea grabbed Jo's wrist and turned her around, so that they were facing each other. She leaned forward (Thank you) and rested her head on Jo's shoulder (I love you) and embraced her wife (You're my entire world).
They heard the whispering of anyone who past by, but I'm that moment, everyone else disappeared. Jo couldn't think of anything other than how grateful she was that she left the hunt for Hemithea.
In that moment, it was just Emmie and Jo.
Their tears fell to the ground.
