Shikamaru x Sakura

He saw her.

Beneath the black velvet sky filled with stars, he saw her with a blissful expression painted across her face. Like a tranquil painting on canvas, she had looked absolutely breathtaking. He had never thought of himself as the romantic type but every time he would see her, his heart skips a beat. He always believed that his wisdom would save him from falling in love but as fate deemed it, this woman basking the night's silence had taken his breath away.

He would see her pink tresses billow in the breeze and he would feel the constricting pain in his chest which he had desperately tried to ignore. Like a mounting dejection in his being, he knew he wasn't made to have her.

Her eyes would look away and her lips would tell him everything he needed to know. She still had reserved her heart for the negligent Uchiha and he knew he wasn't in the place to question her.

He loved her and words wouldn't be able to describe how he really felt.

His feet—out of its accord—started to move towards her. A breadth's away from him, she lay watching the stars scattered across the sky. He flopped himself beside her and decided to enjoy her presence between the deafening silence. His eyes fluttered close and appreciated the warmth that radiated from her body. A relaxed sigh would escape his lips every now and then.

Subconsciously, he thought he felt soft, gentle fingers thread across his open palm and fingers and he drew in a shaky breath. His eyes opened in surprise and saw bright emerald eyes staring back at him. For once, she had finally looked at him and had let him see the swirling emotions hidden beneath her thick lashes.

Like a whirlwind, he saw through her eyes the longing, the pain, and the fear of rejection that she had tried to hide. He knew his eyes mirrored her own as he saw a soft smile appear on her lips.

Swiftly and without hesitation, she closed the gap in between them and captured his lips on her own in a searing kiss. A spark of passion blazed throughout his whole member that had made him bring her closer, molding her body against his—desperate for her touch.

Her hands flew to his hair and pulled him closer, deepening the kiss. A smile fleeted across his face as he hit realization.

She lied through her lips in fear of his rejection—when in reality, he too was afraid of what her feelings entailed with him—but even though she was afraid of telling him the truth, her eyes gave her away.

Truly, words cannot be trusted—

"I love you, Shikamaru," she murmured under her breath, a smile visible on her lips.

—and yet he found himself believing them anyway.
