Just a little drabble from Jace's point of view – place it sometime between the end of City of Ashes and the beginning of City of Glass.
Disclaimer: Disclaimed.
If only, if only they could just be two people, just a boy and a girl, just two normal, ordinary people…
Not like this.
Of all the blows that the fates could deal on unsuspecting innocents, this was the absolute worst. The three old crones were probably laughing hysterically somewhere with their ancient wooden spindle at the predicament, the threads of his and Clary's lives dangling carelessly from their wrinkled fingers. In his head Jace cursed all manner of deities, whether they existed or not – how could they do this? Hand him everything that he had ever wanted and then snatch it straight from his grasp? He had tasted the forbidden fruit, let its sweetness penetrate his taste buds and fill him with pleasure and satisfaction – and now that he'd had a taste of it, to have it taken away like this was the most unbearable thing in the world.
Clary was the most beautiful girl in the world, the one thing he desired above all others…and she was his sister. Forbidden, forbidden, wrong. The clangor that generated in his head from that one word – that one reprehensible, disgusting word – nearly deafened him. Whenever his thoughts strayed to her, which they did often, the noise would start up again and he would hate himself, hate himself for being unable to keep the promise he made – both to her and to himself.
"I'll just be your brother from now on."
Hah! What a joke. What kind of a brother thought of nothing but his sister's luscious volumes of hair, the lilt in her voice when she was amused, the glint in her eyes when she had figured something out, the feather soft touch of her lips on his? He was a failure in every sense of the word, he'd broken his promise, and this noise, this ringing, was not helping…
He needed to get out of here.
If only, oh if only he could.
Because being away from her just made everything, if that was possible, ten times worse.
Kind of short, but it's just a drabble after all. Please review!
