Her eyes

He heard the medivac nurses detail the medical state of Sara. They knew Sara was 35 old, had a broken arm, was dehydrated and had cuts and scrapes on her face, but they didn't know her the way he did.

He knew she was a vegetarian, had a tattoo, what her favourite music was and favourite movie. He knew she cared for their dog, that she was a great criminalist, that she loved her job and her co-workers. He knew why she was in the dessert, what had happened, he also knew that staying put was not her way, he knew why she had started wandering and he knew she would have found the road, she was not far from it when they found her. He also knew she would not like to stay in the hospital long and he knew that he would take some days off to take care of her.

But he also knew that this nightmare would hunt her in her dreams. He knew that for the coming weeks she would wake up screaming, not for one of the victims they often saw, it would not be for Cammy, she would wake up screaming for herself. He knew he would wrap his arms around her when she woke up, he would sooth her, knowing it would only help so much, but enough, as she had often said.

But all that knowledge didn't matter, the only knowledge that mattered now was that he knew how Sara Sidle woke. And that knowledge told him before the nurses saw it, when Sara woke. He could see her lift one brow, just slightly, you wouldn't know it if you didn't know where to look, but he knew and saw her lift her brow. He saw her slowly opening her eyes and saw the glint telling him that she could see. He smiled, was relieved, was happy, was everything, because he knew he hadn't lost her.

His knowledge of the world, of bugs, of science and of Sara didn't matter, when he saw her beautiful brown eyes finding his. Her eyes were al that mattered now. Her eyes were his world.
