Coming Home

It was time. Time he went home and tried to fix at least some of the bridges he'd broken before and hope that they weren't completely burned to the ground. He isn't entirely sure what to expect; at least not on all fronts. He knows what to expect from his father: the usual disappointment at best, criticism and a wall of thorns that neither of them really knows how to breach. His brother will give him the usual supercilious look, the one that always reminds Jake how many things he got wrong, how much of a disappointment he has been to his family.

He is counting on his mother to still love him, still welcome him home in the only way she knows how to do anything – with all of her heart. She'll support him too, he's sure of it.

Then there's Stanley. He doesn't know what to expect there. He's been gone so long, out of touch without a word. Would Stanley be willing to accept him back?

And Emily… What would Emily think of him now? Would she ever understand? Can he ever make amends for all the things that he's done wrong in Jericho and since leaving?

The last thing he ever expected was how much he would be able to give, how much he could do to begin to make amends. If he had died then, he might not have redeemed his past, but he would know that what he had done there would mean the world to the people around him. He had done the right thing, saved as many people as he could, turned the knowledge he had gained to some good at last. He could be sure that his impact there in Jericho was for the best at last.
