Drabble – Toys
The two nursemaids sat next to each other and talked as their charges played on the floor a few feet away from them. The three little boys were building a bridge with blocks of wood and stone. The bridge had collapsed several times in the making and the three little ones were trying again to get it to span the puddle in front of them.
The maids turned to see the King and General Hephaestion approach. The men talked as they walk but both of their heads turned towards the construction site as they walked by. They kept talking but stopped and watched the bridge collapse yet again; the little boys groaning loudly as their hard work lie in ruins in the puddle.
Hephaestion was the first to address the building crew, asking how things were going. Three little voices all talked at once to report the progress, or lack there of.
Alexander soon joined in and ideas started floating on how to solve the problem.
The nursemaids sat and watched as the now five little boys, all on their knees in the mud and dirt, tried first one way and then another to get the bridge completed. Royal robes and weapons were soon discarded and replaced with dirty hands and muddy knees.
One of the women looked at the other and grinned as a heated argument broke out between the King and his chief architect. The little boys sat back and listened to the two men 'discuss' the best way to get things down.
From behind them, Alexander and Hephaestion heard a soft but commanding voice.
"If you two can't play together nicely, you will have to come sit by us for awhile till you learn to behave and get along."
Three little giggles could be heard beside them.
