Doctor Temperance Brennan looked across the small table at her opponent and smiled. Seeley Booth's brow was creased in thought and Brennan couldn't help but to feel sorry for him. It really wasn't his fault that he had gotten roped into a game of chess. If anybody was to blame it was Hodgins for teasing Booth's ego. It had all started out innocently enough. Her and Zack had been discussing chess when Booth had come sauntering into the labs. Then the agent made a fatal mistake, he let it out that he could play chess. Hodgins had grabbed hold with both hands, and at the end, Booth had agreed to a game against her.
She shook her head and made her move in half the time it had taken Booth. Angela, Hodgins, Zack and Cam stood around they—all sworn not to make a sound that might influence either player. Brennan looked up again at Booth, who still had on a mask of half-confusion. She knew that she should have refused to play him. She knew that when he lost his ego would be bruised, putting him in a bad mood for the rest of the day, but Cam had called her a chicken.
Brennan sighed inwardly as she waited for Booth to move. I could let him win, she thought to herself. She glanced over at her colleagues and changed her mind. They would know if she threw the game and then it would get back to Booth. No, she was playing as if it was some stranger across from her--she was out to win. "Check mate," Booth said pulling Brennan from her thoughts. Quickly, she looked down at the board and then up at Booth, who was sitting back in his chair smugly.
"I don't believe it," Hodgins replied in disbelief.
"I do," Zack said. "Booth had her four moves back."
"Don't look so surprise, Bones," Booth said. "I told you that I played chess."
"Yeah, but I just didn't think…"
"That I could beat you?" Booth offered with a laugh, causing Brennan to blush. "Don't worry about it," the agent said standing and holding out his hand. "Good game?"
Brennan smiled up at him and shook his hand. "Good game."
