I have only seen the first seven episodes of this series and it has already drawn me in. There is no time in the series where this takes place. Consider it pre-series if you wish.

Each sweep of the sword is a line from a story. Every moment says
something important to the tale and the ending stroke completes it.
Souji had loved to listen to the stories that were told when he was
younger. As a child he had begun to learn to tell them; perfecting
them, changing them until they were his masterpieces. Souji was proud
of them.
Hijikata didn't hear the same things that he did. Oh, the basic
themes were there, the same storyline, but there were different
villians, different heros.
Still, the stories that Souji heard in Hijikata's moves were
enchanting in their own right. Different from his own, but
masterfully done.
Hijikata had told him after the first telling, that he, Souji, could
not make these his own unlike the others that he had learned. But the
older man had also told him that he wanted Okita's stories to be told
by his own blade because he told them well.
Souji had accepted. There were other tales besides Hijikata's to
learn after all and he wished to make them his own.
