The Restless Wave

When I go down to the ocean
I watch the restless wave
It is nature's only tombstone
In memory of the brave

Beneath the ocean's surface
In the dark and silent deep
In God's hands are the heroes
For whom our hearts still weep

The years have passed so quickly
But my vigil I still keep
They are not dead but resting
In the ocean fast asleep

There are no special markers
In this graveyard far from shore
Just restless waves above them
For now and evermore.

Wendy was no more.
In that cave the girl that had been so full of life and untainted innocence withered at the hands of a nameless, faceless foe. Cruel this enemy was, taking away a precious friend that brought light into a room by entering it, and left only a hollow, bitter shell.

Lt Winters was all that remained now.

Eyes that once had been filled with the gleam of laughter now seemed dull and lifeless, yet so piercing and cold. The slender face that had constantly worn a smile and lopsided glasses now was creased with wrinkles, unnaturally aged before her time. And the once infamously thick golden hair now permanently stayed tied back in a bun of thing white hair. No more pigtails or funky braids, and never that signature cat toque.

The young woman they had all known was gone, taken from them by the wraith.

Only a shell, a mere shadow of their companion was left.

Even if they were ever able to return to Earth, she could never return home. She was too changed, there was no possible way that her appearance could be hidden or explained away. And all she wanted when they found her lying, delirious, in the cave next to a dead wraith was her family.

Over and over as they carried her back to Atlantis she begged for her mom, called for her dad, and pleaded for her brother to come protect her.

While the medical staff knew she was in a bad way, they didn't expect her actions until it was too late.

With a portable DHD that God knew where she got it, she stood in front of the 'Gate and activated the wormhole. She disappeared in a brilliant flash of white and blue with a smile on her upturned face.
