Suteki Da Ne
(The Wingless Angel's Song)
I take a step,
Lights shine,
The music begins,
I feel the beat,
I begin to sing.
Fans cheer and call my name,
I smile,
I ask them of a song,
Their ears long to hear.
A girl,
No more than 7,
Holds up her hand,
I walk over to the edge of the stage,
Holding the microphone to her.
She grins,
Turning a bright red,
'I… would…'
She coughed,
Gasping for air,
I blink,
And look beyond her,
Seeing a respirator,
A nurse was standing behind her.
She regains herself,
'I would like to hear,
"Suteki Da Ne,
That song is my favorite,
From Final Fantasy,
The best game,"
"It's in Japanese,"
She continues,
"Please, sing it for me!"
I frown slightly,
"I do not know that song very well,
And I cannot sing Japanese,
But I will try,
Just for you, sweetie!"
I stand up,
Walking back to center stage,
"Wait!" The girl cried,
waving a piece of paper in the air.
I walk back over,
And take the paper gently,
"It's the words,
Martha," She pointed to the nurse,
"Wrote them out for me,
I thought the could help you!"
I grin,
"The will, indeed."
I walk back,
The band begins to play again,
Slow and soft.
"Suteki da ne
Futari te wo tori aruketa nara
Ikitai yo
KIMI no machi ie ude no naka
Sono mune
Karada azuke
Yoi ni magire
Yumemiru
Kaze wa tomari kotoba wa
Yasashii maboroshi
Kumo wa yabure ashita wa
Tooku no koe"
The girl was grinning broadly,
For a while as I sung this foreign song,
Then it struck,
The girl's face paled,
Her eyes fogged,
She fell back,
The nurse made to catch her.
I stopped singing,
Running to the edge of the stage,
Peering over to watch the nurse,
Trying to get her to breathe.
I pointed to a man,
"You, call a doctor!"
He just stared,
"That was an order,
Not a suggestion,
Dammit!"
The man pulled out his cell,
Calling quickly the 911,
He told him that a girl got sick,
And was struggling to breathe,
At the big concert.
"They're on their way,"
The man sighed.
It's been a week since the concert,
I stand in black,
As a small coffin gets lowered into the ground.
I wait for everyone else to be gone,
I stand by the girls grave,
Which read:
'Sarah McBeth,
An Angel without Wings',
I close my eyes,
And kneel,
And quietly sing.
"Suteki da ne
Futari te wo tori aruketa nara
Ikitai yo
KIMI no machi ie ude no naka
Sono mune
Karada azuke
Yoi ni magire
Yumemiru
That face,
A soft touch,
Dissolving into morning,
I dream"
