Will, Dear
It was a calm sunny day shining over the Lima, Ohio State Gardens. The Gardens itself weren't much to rave over but the residents always had a soft spot for them. On this particular summer day an elderly couple was making their way up the gentle hill to the 'hydrangea haven' spot. Both clearly in their seventies, the man had a wicker picnic basket slung over his shoulder and his wife in front of him, a folded picnic rug and what appeared to be a box of disinfectant wipes. The woman stumbled a couple of times before they reached the top but her husband was always there to give her a steadying hand. Eventually they settled themselves under a conveniently located maple tree. The man placed down his basket and helped his wife set out the rug.
"Pass the spray would you please Will, dear." Chirped the woman.
Will nodded as he extracted the anti bacterial spray from the basket and handed it to Emma. She precisely sanitized their eating area. Through an acquired sixth sense, Will began setting out the arrangement of food, plates and various household cleaners as soon as he felt his wife's satisfaction with the hygiene level.
The two almost in sync prepared a little outdoor meal for which they would share, then finally nestled into each other, Will sitting against the trunk of the tree and Emma at his side. He looked lovingly down at his companion as she uttered a little contented sigh. The fire had long been extinguished from her now silver hair but it still shone with life. Wrinkles scattered her delicate face but did not touch her wide, brown, doe eyes that he loved so much. He brushed a stray lock back behind her ear making her look up from nibbling on her sandwich. A quizzical look flickered in her eyes but he just smiled. Though Emma had long gotten used to Will touching her, he couldn't help but adore how her pulse would quicken whenever he did.
The couple sat in a comfortable silence picking at their platter as the clouds played chase with the sun. Emma wiped down the plates when they were finished and set them back in the basket and then lay back into Will's chest.
"Has it really been this long?" she whispered just loud enough for him to hear
"Yes." He murmured into her hair.
Emma just smiled and sipped her drink. Will chuckled quietly then began to hum a tune.
"'Cause we belong together now, yeah
Forever united here somehow, yeah
You got a piece of me…"
She giggled beginning to tap her feet to the beat of his voice. But this caused the plastic cup of flavored water sitting at her feet to tip over and slosh the liquid all over her shoes.
Will stopped singing immediately at the disturbance and a small gasp escaped Emma's lips. She froze as Will shifted himself from out underneath her.
"It's just a bit of-" he began but she had already tentatively taken off her shoes and tossed them onto the grass.
"You did it." He smiled still concerned though of her shaking frail form. She looked up at him with her big brave eyes.
"I did, didn't I?" she beamed quietly, "But could you still pass me the disinfectant Will, dear."
Will just chuckled again as he reached back into the basket.
He had been with Emma for many years now; Been with her odd little quirks and paranoia's. But he loved her all the same. And as the sky painted itself a sunset, his only regret was that he didn't realize she was the one sooner.
