Summary: Melinda's reaction to Coulson's death. Kind of uses the idea that one can feel their loved one's pain.

Melinda May cried out in pain as she fell to the ground. It felt as though she'd just been stabbed through the heart. Mind you, she'd never been stabbed through the heart before, so she couldn't be considered an authority. She wanted to cry from the pain and confusion; confusion over what had caused the pain.

An agent approached her and helped her to the med bay, where she tried to explain the pain to no avail. It was gone, and she could only say that it felt as though she'd been stabbed. The doctor examined her and could find no cause as to why the pain had appeared and disappeared so suddenly. She was told to take the rest of the day.

Later, as she lay on her bed and was just about to fall asleep, her phone began to buzz. She groaned and rolled over to retrieve it from the table beside her bed. The message was from Maria, so she unlocked her phone, thinking it could be important. The message was short, only two words.

Coulson's dead.

Looking at the message brought a new type of pain to Melinda's chest. Now she felt as though her heart had been ripped out. Another message came, this one slightly longer than the last, but no better.

Stabbed through the heart. I'm sorry.

Melinda now knew what had caused the pain in her heart. She'd always known that she and Phil had a connection, and she'd finally realized how deep that connection was. She had loved him, never told him despite their connection, and now he was dead. She threw her phone to the ground and let the tears flow. They may have been connected, but what good was their connection if she couldn't save him?
