The days and nights blurred together, seeking but never finding. A scent here, a dead-end there, giving up was not an option.
Finally a path, a hidden opening at the back of a narrow cave, a winding tunnel.
We spotted him simultaneously, his nude form stretched taut across the altar. Shackles bit cruelly into the soft skin of his wrists and ankles.
His flat stomach rose and fell with a shallow breath and we both remembered to breathe again.
The only thing between us and him was a room full of critters who didn't yet realize they were already dead.
