He smiled at me; sweet and slow. I wondered if this would be the only genuine smile of his I would ever see. Part of me knew he wasn't coming back. It was just the way life worked. Right? There's finally a breakthrough of sorts between two people, one goes off on some righteous mission, and then that's it. They're gone, no happy ending. And as if that would be the one thing to change for the better in an apocalyptic world.
I manage to mentally stomp my cynical thoughts down enough to offer him a smile of my own before I see his back heading swiftly in the opposite direction. I feel panic take my body and I throw out my hand unconsciously as if trying to stop him. But I know there's nothing I can say that will make this better. I watch him disappear, whatever words I may have been desperately about to expel dying in my throat.
Author's note: Going to be Glenn's POV for the first few chapters, at least, which have already been written (and are much longer than this tidbit). Looking for a Beta for future chapters published? Please PM me if you're interested! This is the first fic I've written in quite some time so I'm a bit rusty, and this is also the first fic I've posted on so I'm getting used to the site again. Can't wait to share more with y'all!
