"Lily, I miss you." Severus breathed, not expecting the red-head to hear him. He felt nervous as she turned to face him, waving away her dark friend that was waiting for her.

"You miss me." Her voice was filled with dis-belief. Severus had never felt more vulnerable, never more at someone's mercy. Slowly, tentatively, he nodded.

Lily walked slowly towards him, her face showing no emotion, not clueing him in to what she might do next. She stopped in front of him, staring at him for a moment. Without any warning and in a clean, swift movement- she slapped him. He staggered back slightly, feeling the horror displayed on his face. It wasn't from what she had done that had him feeling so petrified, but from the small tears that were now collecting in her eyes.

"Lily, don- don't cry. Please?" His voice broke on the last word. It didn't stop her.

"Why… would you… miss me?" This time, her voice was curious. Severus looked at his feet, unable to meet her eyes.

"I'm sorry, for what I said. I didn't mean it, I never meant it. It just-"

"Slipped out." She finished for him, a ghost of their former argument.

"Lily, I want you to be my friend again. Like we used to, remember?" He pleaded.

"No!" Her sudden outrage shocked him, "I've spent so long, trying to forget it. Trying to forget what you did! It wasn't just about calling me mudblood. It was about you! The fact that I trusted you and thought you would never, ever break that trust. That you would never go and support him! You-Know-Who! But you did, you are! Tell me you're not, Severus! Tell me!" She was breathing hard, waiting for him to speak. The tears were now gushing down her cheeks, matting in her hair.

"Lily," He croaked, "I need you back in my life, Lily. I need you. Lily, I lov-"

"Shut up!" She roared, her voice screeching, "Shut up, shut up, shut up!" and with that, she turned and ran- leaving Severus on his own and helpless.

Just like he had been since fifth year.
