SPRING

Light filters through the leaves of the trees and stains the pavement with a soft yellow glow.

Two people sit on the park bench, not saying anything.

The male begins the speaking. He wears a white cap and a tennis uniform. In his hand is a can – slightly lighter than it was when first bought.

"Senpai, what did you call me out for, anyway?"

He takes a sip, before turning to the girl. His tone is slightly puzzled, but his face makes no effort to change expression.

"Nothing,"

The two sit there in total silence yet again.

Birds chirp the songs of the end of winter and the beginning of something new.

A few more minutes pass. The boy appears to be getting slightly bored, and looks away from the spot he had so fixedly focused on – a patch of sky, startlingly blue and cloudless.

"Senpai,"

The boy appears to be choosing his words carefully.

"Yes?"

Her voice penetrated the silence, but did not obstruct it.

"Nothing."

He returns to the patch of sky, only to realise that its reflective clearness has been punctuated by a small cloud.

And the two sit there, not saying anything, but saying a lot.

"Senpai,"

"Yes?"

"I love you."

Spring has begun.
