Chapter One
Meredith took a few gasping breaths and tried her calm her heart pounding in her chest. Dr. Wyatt just waited. Meredith can't be pushed.
She shook her hair out of her eyes gently and started to speak, "I had a little brother. My mom would lock us in the bathroom when she went to work. One day…he just died. I've never told anyone about him before."
Dr. Wyatt took a deep breath, "ok," she said softly; if only to let Meredith know that she was listening.
"So you think I'm broken? Fix me," Meredith replied, "because I'm no quitter…lets go."

"What do you remember about him?" Dr. Wyatt prompted. Meredith had been half sitting half leaning on the arm of the couch staring at the fish tank for the past ten minutes. She felt too nervous to sit down; too raw. She wanted to pace, she wanted to scream, she wanted to sleep!
"Um…it was after my dad left. My mom and I were in Boston," she supplied looking at Dr. Wyatt.
"Did your mom keep you in the bathroom a lot?"
"My dad used to watch me. She didn't bother to find some one else to take care of me. She kept me in the closet once, but…" Meredith looked back at the fish tank.
"It's okay to talk about it," assured Dr. Wyatt.
"Dr. Wyatt, my mother had a baby one day. She was in her room screaming, came out with a baby, and gave him to me to take care of. A few months later, she was at work, we were in the bathroom and he stopped breathing. He was blue. Blue and gone…it's not okay to talk about it."
Meredith looked back at the fish and tried to take regular, calming breaths. She felt light headed and shaky.
"What was his name?"
Meredith continued staring at the fish. They almost seemed to hypnotize her. They calmed her. They weaved in and out of routes around each other. Their world was so small…so simple.
"Meredith, what was his name?" Dr. Wyatt asked again.
"He didn't have a name," replied Meredith softly, lowering her head toward her chest, curling over herself.
She didn't notice Dr. Wyatt get up and approach her.
"I just called him baby. He was…" she started seeing spots, "he had…beautiful deep chocolate colored skin. I just thought your skin color happened randomly. Didn't matter what color your parents were. You could be born green, or yellow, or…" She gasped for breath, "I'm going to…"
Meredith passed out without even realizing she had already lowered herself to the floor.
