This is a part of the challenge "Special Places". Just one shot to remind us, Deyna lovers, that they can be sweet together.
Special thanks to Shiny Jewel for beta-reading and other things.
This is for you chatty ladies. Enjoy it.
Rayna walked into the building through one of the back doors. It was extremely late and she should have been getting her beauty rest to look her best for tomorrow, but as soon as she heard his voice begging her to come down there, she couldn't say no.
When her phone had rang waking her up a half hour earlier, thousands of things crossed her mind in the two minutes that took her to find and answer it, and none of them were good.
She had picked it up and heard Deacon's voice on the other end.
"Babe… I'm so sorry. I know you must be sleeping…but… I need you here…"
"Deacon, what's going on? Is everything okay?"
"I'm okay darlin, but can you come here? I need your opinion on my set for tomorrow. You've performed at the Opry a million times. I promise I'll make it up to you for dragging you out of bed middle of the night."
"You're lucky I love you so much. Give me five minutes. I need to throw some clothes on."
While she was changing, she thought of all the times they had been at the Opry.
There were the times they had played together as a couple, eager for the show to end so they could go home and burn off the adrenaline from performing. The ones where they were just friends and her family was waiting for her backstage, some girl in the crowd waiting to be taken home by him.
There were times they watched each other from the side of the stage, playing with other people. Those were the hardest times.
But this time, she was just going to be a guest along with their daughters and his family, and he was going to be the main act of a great night.
Truth is, although she missed being the center of it all, she was so proud of him and so happy that all his promises were being kept, especially since them being together again had Maddie happier than ever.
They'd transitioned back into being a couple again, slowly. The guitar lessons had moved to Rayna´s house, so Daphne could be included. And more often than not, Deacon would cook dinner for all of them, while Rayna worked on label business. The nights would end with a sing along with the girls and after the girls were in bed, they would take some alone time to write or just to be with each other. Their little family was coming together.
In trying to build up her label, she had hired Will, as she had originally planned. Scarlett never left Nashville and after getting back together with Gunnar, Rayna signed them both on to Highway 65 as well as a duo. But, Rayna´s proudest acquisition was her own fiancé. After lots of late night talks between them, and with Bucky and Tandy, Deacon agreed to be a part of her label, but only under the condition she treated him the same as the other artists.
"No privileges," he had said when he signed the contract.
"Only the one of sharing the bed with you, babe," she had answered back.
And with that, Bucky and Tandy had silently walked themselves outside the room, while Deacon cornered Rayna to seal that promise.
As she entered the Grand Ole Opry house, she could hear the faint noise of the band playing one of her favorite songs and the voice that made her tingle inside with so much love she could hardly contain herself from running straight to his arms.
Rayna chose to listen to him a little bit more before making her presence known, so she stood behind one of those big curtains watching him be the man he is today.
A husband and father to their child.
Like it was always meant to be.
