My mom was on the phone when I arrived from college. She looked worried and walked impatiently around the kitchen.
"Ok Charlie, I'll talk to her." I heard her say while I walked into the hall.
"Mom I'm home!" Who was she talking to? Who was she going to talk to? The name Charlie echoed in my head and I immediately though about my uncle. He never called except on Christmas and it was far from Christmas, so apparently something happened.
I used to spend a lot of time with uncle Charlie and aunt Renée when they were still married, I also remembered their daughter, Bella. We were pretty close at a young age but since her parents divorced we grew apart.
"Hi darling! How was your day?" I was so absorbed by my own thoughts and questions that I didn't see my mother approaching.
"Hum… fine I guess. I'm tired, what's for dinner? Do you need help?" I said while my mom kissed and hugged me.
"No, no, your father texted me saying we're having dinner at the local restaurant." I simply nodded, not in a mood for a big conversation. "Uncle Charlie called." She started, conducting the conversation into the exact direction I wanted. I gave her a look, encouraging her to go on. "He needs your help." That caught me off guard. Charlie needed MY help? "For what?" I asked, curiosity filling my eyes.
My mom gestured to the couch and I immediately realized that this conversation was taking serious proportions. "Your cousin Bella, you remember her, right? She's not ok…" So what did I have to do with that? We used to be friends but I rarely talked to her now. I nodded again avoiding speaking.
"Your uncle asked me if you wanted to spend your vacations in Forks with them, to see if you could help your cousin." I opened my mouth ready to protest but my mom continued "She has been very depressed, you know? And your uncle, he's devastated, he doesn't know what to do anymore." My mom spoke so slowly that it was annoying me even more than the actual content of the conversation. How would I be able to help a person that I barely knew? Didn't she have friends to help her?
"Why would I help her? Why would she listen to me? She doesn't know me, probably doesn't even like me." I protested raising my voice a bit. "I planned to spend my vacations with Alex, he's staying here in Washington."
Alex was my on and off boyfriend. We used to break up a lot but now things were stable and our relationship was turning into a serious thing.
"I'm sure if you tell him what happened he'll understand." I sighed, my mom didn't understand. "But I don't want to go! I want to stay, with Alex, and you… I don't want to play super hero with Bella. I'm sure she has friends who are willing to help her."
My mom gestured with her arms, telling me to calm down. I was probably acting like a bitch but the truth was that I wouldn't be able to change anything in Bella's life, I would only be a burden to her and her father.
"At least think about it." Oh no, don't come with the puppy eyes! My mom knew me too well. I nodded and grabbed my things, climbing up the stairs to my room. I needed a bath. Urgently!
Dinner with my parents was okay but I couldn't wait to get out of the restaurant and meet Alex. He was waiting for me at the usual pub, down the street, drinking scotch.
"Hello love." He said in is adorable British accent before kissing me. He smelled like cigarettes as usual and his hair was messy. "How was the university?"
I took a sip of his glass before answering his question in a really fake British accent. "Boring as always." That made him chuckle and he gently touched my cheek, bringing the glass to his lips.
"I need to talk to you." I have to admit that I was expecting his reaction. He immediately eyed me with concern, placing the glass back on the table. "What is it, love? Is something wrong?" Alex grabbed my hands, caressing them. I shook my head, trying to calm him. "No. I mean, it has nothing to do with our relationship, relax." He let out a sight and that made me smile. He was so idiotic sometimes. "My uncle Charlie called today. He asked my mom if I could spend the vacations with him and my cousin Bella. Apparently she's not okay and he hopes I can help her, which I doubt I can…" I observed him attentively, trying to predict any reaction from him but he's face was a total blank expression. So I decided to continue. "I know you were going to stay in Washington so we could spend some time together and I really want to stay with you, but… It's my family and, although I know I won't be able to do much, I'll feel bad if I don't try to help them."
Alex just shook his head and I could tell he felt disappointed. It pained me to hurt him like that but I couldn't turn the back on my family.
