Bianca examined herself in the mirror. Blue curls fell across her shoulders, tied into pigtails on the side of her head, a pink bow sitting elegantly at the peak of her head. It was the same hairstyle she wore every day. In fact, she had worn that same hairstyle every day ever since she had turned sixteen.
That was when her life had begun to settle into a well-defined pattern. That's when she finally lost all interest in people less wealthy than herself, and lost interest in the sorts of things they did. Only the best would do for her.
Suddenly, a distressed wail pierced the air. But, rather than be surprised, Bianca groaned and rolled her eyes. This had happened every day since she had arrived in Trampoli.
The girl who delivered the mail freaked out whenever she walked past one of the houses near Bianca's summer mansion. Apparently she thought that there was a ghost haunting the house. Which was absurd.
Suddenly Bianca decided she'd had enough. She made her way toward the front door decidedly. She had come to this village for a summer vacation, and she intended to have an enjoyable time. That was impossible if something like this happened every morning.
Bianca marched out of her mansion and over to the house next door. The girl who delivered the mail stood next to the mailbox, shaking like a leaf in the wind. Her strawberry blonde hair hung over her shoulders in two braids. She was wearing a red coat and hat, and a mail-bag was slung over her shoulder. Her head turned toward Bianca when she noticed the wealthy girl heading her way.
"This house is haunted! I always hear a voice talking to me when I'm near this house, but no one is there!" The girl, whose name was Anette, said. Bianca glanced towards the house. Standing in the shadowy doorway, she saw a human-like shape standing there. For a few seconds, she was afraid too; the form did look a little ghostly. But then, when she looked harder, she realized it was just a guy. He had really long dark brown hair hanging across his face. Bianca rolled her eyes.
"Are you blind?! That's not a ghost. It's just a guy!" Bianca yelled. Anette gasped, and then looked at the door. After a few seconds she realized Bianca was right.
"Hello, Ms. Mailman." The man said quietly.
"H-h-hi," Annete stammered back.
The guy in the doorway smiled a small, sad smile. Bianca blinked, and the smile was gone.
"B-bye." Annete said, and then hurried off towards Bianca's house. The guy watched Anette leave, then turned towards Bianca.
"Thank you. It makes me so sad when people are afraid of me. Can I offer you some tea?"
Bianca snickered. "You're crazy if you think I would come into your dirty little house." He flinched. "I live in a beautiful, lavish mansion. Why would I want to even go near your little dirt pit?! Your whole farm is pathetic! No one in the village even knows who you are. I would never keep company with such a nobody." Bianca tossed her hair over her shoulder and flounced off.
As she left, the quiet man's face had never been further from a smile.
