They don't know it, but they will fall in love.
Delphine's eyes will meet Cosima's that fateful day. They will lock in on each other, staring for much longer than necessary. Their hearts will pump and their fingers will tingle with adrenaline. At that moment, they won't know exactly what it is they're feeling; they will just know that they must meet.
Their hands must touch. Their bodies must be close.
They will laugh, sitting together in a small café. Cosima will take off her glasses, clean them, squint her eyes as she replaces them on her face; and Delphine will fall hard.
Delphine will take a drag from her cigarette; she will release a plume of smoke through slightly parted lips, and as it floats softly skyward Cosima will sink farther in love.
Cosima will feel hot whenever she's around the other woman. She will be sure that the snow is melting right under her boots. She won't say anything, though, because what if Delphine turns out to not be gay?
Delphine's heart will flutter whenever Cosima smiles, but she won't say anything because she's never considered bisexuality before.
But sexuality is a spectrum, she'll remind herself as she stands with Cosima under a grey sky, body trembling with need. She'll think to hell with sexuality and she'll press her lips to Cosima's beside that old leaf-less oak tree and Cosima's breath will shudder in her throat and before she has the chance to properly react, Delphine will have already pulled away, murmuring apologies as she does.
Cosima will laugh, despite being stunned to almost-silence, and pull Delphine towards her by the hand. She'll say "Don't apologize, geez. Don't ever apologize for talent."
And then she'll kiss Delphine back, and the birds will sing and everything will feel simple and right.
They'll lie in bed for hours and just gaze at one another. Cosima will stroke Delphine's face during a kiss and Delphine will run her foot up and down Cosima's leg for the duration of their dinner date, until Cosima finally has enough and practically drags the other woman out of the restaurant and home to their bed.
They won't be able to get enough of each other.
Delphine will never get tired of Cosima's "grumpy morning face." Cosima will never tire of Delphine's habit of making coffee every morning but never drinking it because she doesn't actually like coffee, just the smell.
They will be happy.
They will be loved.
They just don't know it yet.
