Two weeks after Mugiwara no Luffy and his crew are executed, a small marine ship lands on the island where the Red Hair pirates have set up base.
It's captained by Vice Admiral Coby, and they're flying the flag of truce.
Half the crew is watching them wearily, in case of deception, but the other half is too deep in their grief to even react.
Lucky Roo is without his ever present shank of meat, leaning silently against the inconsolable Yasopp.
Benn Beckman is cleaning his gun, his hair stringy, greasy, his eyes raw from the tears.
But even in his grief he stands menacingly over his captain, watching the newcomers for even a hint of malice.
Coby does his best to be as respectful as possible as he approaches Red Hair Shanks.
He knows how much Luffy had looked up to this man, had nearly worshiped him in the way he only did one other (his predecessor).
But Shanks is hunched in on himself now, time and grief having ebbed away so much of his strength. He's broken, with the loss of his surrogate son, his little anchor.
Coby stands in front of him for a moment, waiting to be acknowledged.
When Shanks continues to stare at his feet, Coby sighs and gestures at one of the men accompanying him, and is handed something wrapped loosely in cloth.
Taking the object with gentle fingers, Coby places it on Shanks' knees, then turns to leave.
Shanks sits still for the longest time, not bothering to check what it is.
Then, he shifts slightly, and the cloth falls away, stealing his breath away with it.
There, sitting on his knees, is a ratty old straw hat.
