Like every other girl…
Luna Lovegood was starring the thestrals. She had no idea if any of her classmates could see them, but of course, she wouldn't mind if they did. She was glad she was given the opportunity to actually be near them.
They were beautiful somehow. It wasn't the characterization a random person would give them. But Luna was not a random person. She was a girl, just like every other girl of her age, just… much more open- minded than all the others.
She heard him coming but didn't turn. She didn't want to scare the thestrals. He was one of Ginny's friends, not the funny one, neither the shy, the other one- the thoughtful. Harry Potter. From the way he stood next to her, from the way his breath hissed in his throat, she could tell he saw them too. She was glad he did.
He seemed a nice boy to her. They talked a lot that day, about nothing in particular, but from their conversation she truly liked him. A lot. The truth was that she was flattered by the attention he gave her.
He invited her to a Party. As friends, of course. Then they fought together- against the Death Eaters. He was so brave. Everyone was so brave. But for him… she couldn't say. Maybe she had fallen for him…
It had been almost two years since that first actual conversation they had in the forest. Harry wasn't at school anymore. He had gone- Merlin knows where- to find a way to destroy Voldemort. She truly hoped he'd succeed.
She wasn't in love with him anymore. She believed she never actually was. It was just that for a year she wanted to be like every other girl. She didn't feel bad for who she was,she wouldn't change herself, her family or up- bringing for anything in the world.
By her fourth year she found a person who, for the first time, showed interest in her. Who truly cared and never laughed or joked about her. Not that she minded the jokes and laughs. She simply found it odd.
She had mistaken her admiration and respect for something different. For something greater. She loved Harry Potter, of course she did! He was her friend, he was so important to her… but in a different way, in the way she would love her brother, in the way she loved Neville, Ginny, Hermione and Ron. She would be devoted to them till the very end. She would fight next to them. But she wasn't in love with any of them. She knew that then. Not even with Harry.
So, feeding the thestrals, which had been starved and tortured since the Death Eaters had taken over the school, she smiled. Luna closed her eyes and wished with all her heart for everything to turn out ok. Not great, just ok. She prayed for her friends, her father, herself and everyone else. She wished for an end, she prayed for redemption.
