A/N: Okay, here's a one shot by moi. This is inspired by a part of the song "Over The Hills and Far Away" by Nighwish (mostly the chorus). Awesome song. If you haven't listened to it, find it, hehe. This is from Lancelot's point of view on that fateful day at Badon Hill. And, just as a note, the woman he talks about is not Guinevere –shudders- Enjoy guys!
He Promises He Will Return
By: Kalanie
I cannot tell you how cold it is, lying here on the ground of the damn island that I was condemned to serve on. The air smells of smoke, blood, and death – not exactly what I want to die smelling. I suppose it can't be helped, though. There's nothing good about this island. Save for one thing. Her. I promised her I would return to her after this battle, even joked about how hard it was to get rid of me. Now, I fear I will not be able to uphold that promise. I remember the last moments we had together, sitting on the bench under our special tree. The day had been relatively nice. Her fingers were interlaced with mine, her grip tight as if she was afraid I'd disappear as soon as I let go of her. My free arm was draped around her shoulders, holding her close. That wonderful smell of Lavender floated up from her hair. I always did wonder how she kept it smelling so fresh without washing it every few hours.
She turned to me and said a few simple words, "I love you Lance."
Those deep blue eyes of hers focused on my deep brown ones. They held a sort of plead to them and it broke my heart to see it there. "I love you too, Nalani."
Her free hand came up and gently caressed my cheek. That touch was so gentle. Every time I looked at her, my chest tightened and my heart felt like it was going to rip out of my chest. After I had met her, I was certain I didn't want to bed another woman. No woman could compare to her. She lowered her hand and set it back in her lap before leaning against me.
"I promise I will return, Nala. Nothing will keep me from you. They could drop me off hundreds of miles from here and I would return to you," I pledged, placing a gentle kiss on her lips.
I felt her gently return my kiss before pulling away. "I'll count down the hours until you return," she said quietly, resting her head on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry, my love, but I must go now." With a last kiss, I rose and left her sitting there. My heart had continued to thud in my chest just as it is doing now as I lie on the bloody earth.
My tears begin to run down my face, sticking to my beard. I long to just hold Nalani in my arms once more to comfort her and let her know everything will be alright. Perhaps we could even have a family together. I wouldn't mind having little ones running around. Perhaps not now, but some day. The darkness is beginning to over come me and I'm struggling to keep it at bay. I can hear the frantic calls of my brothers, scrambling over to me.
What's this? Someone's touching me. I look over to see Arthur at my side, talking to his God. He sickens me even now. "A-Arthur…" I rasp. "T-T…" Damn it. I can't get the words out. They're sticking in my throat. I can't get my message out. The darkness is coming on too fast. I close my eyes, the last physical thing I see is the darkened sky. The last thing I see mentally is my dear beloved, her cheerful smile on her face.
Good bye my love, we will meet again. Back in my arms is where you'll be.
