Mimi was exhausted. She was nine months pregnant and already had a six year old daughter. Recently she had gotten horrible news. Roger was in the military. His platoon had been blown up. There were no survivors. Tears filled her eyes as she realized that Little Rog would never get to know his father.
Mimi put on some music. She found the song GOODBYE OLD GIRL to be very comforting. Roger had once played Joe Boyd in Damn Yankees before he was drafted into the damn war.
And now your Joe
Has to go
But he'll come back to you again
She longed for Roger to come back to her but she knew it was impossible. Luckily she had her older sister April and her friends who really were a support to her. They didn't agree on everything but Mimi trusted April, Collins (who was her doctor and also a good friend of hers) Roger's brother Mark and the rest of them.
...
Halfway across the world Roger was on a plane. He had survived the explosion but nobody had known it. He knew he should have been in the platoon but he had snuck out for a cigarette. He should report himself alive but there was no way in hell he was going to do that. He was not going to spend four years away from Mimi and their children. He hadn't seen Mirya in 7 months. He deserved to see his new son and his six year old baby girl and Mimi.
...
It had been 7 months since Roger left and 3 days since he died. There was no point in living anymore... except for Mirya and Little Rog. She couldn't fall apart. Her daughter needed her and so did her unborn son. She longed to be taken care of but she had to be the one taking care of everyone. She wasn't one of the babies. She was an adult.
Suddenly Mimi's water broke. She called Collins first and he told her to come into the hospital. She called April and April came over to stay with Mirya. She called Mark who drove her to the hospital.
"Stay with me," Mimi begged, "I don't want to be alone when I have this baby."
"Of course I'm going to stay with you," he said kissing her forehead, "I just need to call the others. I'll be right back."
...
Mark had accidentally dialed Roger's number and he picked up.
"ROGER!"
"Mark? Mark it is so good to-"
"You're alive," Mark exclaimed.
"Well you're not talking to my ghost," Roger said, "Yes I'm alive. How's Mimi and Mirya?"
"Mimi just went into labor," Mark explained
...
Six hours passed and Mimi finally was holding Little Rog in her arms. By this time Roger had made it to the hospital.
"Mimi," Mark said, "You have a visitor"
Before Mimi could say anything Mark opened the door and Roger came in. The scream heard throughout the hospital was one of excitement and utter joy.
But he'll come back to you again.
