Chapter 1
"Do you want to dance, Carlos?" Jo asked. He shook his head sadly. He was at the Hollywood Masquerade party 2010 and he wasn't even having fun. Everyone had someone to be with but him (Logan had Camille, Kendall had Jo, and James had Stephanie.) The music was blaring as Jo sat down next to him. She was dressed as a Disney princess, Kendall her prince. She rubbed his back as Carlos sulked.
"I'm sure someone would love to dance with you," she said sympathetically. Carlos, despite his loneliness, looked up and smiled at her.
"Thanks, Jo," he replied, "But Kendall's waiting for his princess. You'd better go." Jo got up reluctantly and walked over to Kendall, who put an arm around her.
"He's so solemn," Kendall commented, "if he's not happy, how can I be?" Jo nodded. They watched him from across the room until the couples' song came on. Carlos stared at the DJ who was oblivious. He balled his hands into fists.
"Quit mocking me!" he yelled. The DJ gave him a funny look and went back to his business. Carlos rotated his body so he could dangle his legs of the side of the booth table chair. A guy started to pass him and didn't notice Carlos' feet. He went down headfirst. Carlos put his hand over his mouth and helped the guy up.
"Man, are you okay?" he asked. The guy had a confused look on his face, but then he burst out giggling. His laugh was interestingly high. He stopped long enough to blurt a sentence.
"I'm not a dude," he giggled. The it pulled off his goatee, mustache, fake eyebrows, and his top hat. Carlos' mouth dropped open when he realized the he was a she. She had olive skin and wavy brown hair with glowing streaks in it. The most interesting thing was her eyes. There was silver eye shadow around them, but her irises were amazing. They were dark as ink, but in the center, there was a ring of electrifying blue. Just then, the song BlackLight by One Call came on. The only thing Carlos could say was,
"Would you like to dance?" He held out his hand. She responded by putting her own in his. The couple walked to out to the floor and started putting out their best moves.
"We'll shut off the house light and turn on the black light The lights go out
Everybody in this place is going crazy
Music knocks you out
There's tension in the air
The kind that makes you feel so good inside
There's nothing in your minds and you're just being driven by the sound."
Camille noticed the two and pointed, smiling. She tugged Logan's jacket and he turned too. James saw them and followed the gaze.
"Kodak moment," he said. Jo, Kendall, and Stephanie agreed. As Carlos and the girl danced, they didn't see the big guy coming towards them. He touched the girl on the shoulder and said, "We need to leave," he ordered, speaking in a monotone voice. Carlos stepped back, alarmed. The girl turned from the big guy to Carlos, not sure what to do. The guy glared.
"We need to leave now!" he shouted. Carlos stepped in front of the girl and glared back.
"You don't need to scream," he said. Instead of replying, the guy yanked the girl's arm and tossed her over his shoulder. She screeched in protest and dropped her top hat. Carlos lunged for her, but it was too late. They'd escaped out the back door. Carlos picked up the hat and his shoulders immediately slumped. The gang circled around him, trying to comfort him.
"I didn't even get her name," he whispered. He looked at the hat's tag and read it aloud.
"Henrie's Hat Shoppe."
