A New Beginning

Messy, raven hair. Hazel eyes. Lopsided glasses. No. It can't be, anyone but him. There's no way James Potter's Head Boy. He's had far too many detentions, and he wasn't even a prefect, for heaven's sake!

"All right there, Evans?" Potter smirked. Arrogant git.

"HOW ARE YOU HEAD BOY?" I yelled, unable to remain calm. Dumbledore must really be off his rocker if he chose Potter as Head Boy.

"It's nice to see you too, Evans! I swear I didn't nick the badge from anyone. Honestly, if I had the choice, I wouldn't even be here right now! Anyhow, Evans–"

"I SWEAR POTTER, IF YOU TRY TO ASK ME OUT ONE MORE TIME, I WILL HEX YOU INTO OBLIVION!" I screamed. We weren't even on the train for 5 minutes, and he's already trying to make a move on me. How pathetic.

"Actually, I just wanted you to make sure all the prefects are here…" he replied calmly. Crap. How embarrassing. My cheeks turned as red as my hair. By this point, the eyes of 24 other individuals were all on me.

"Right…er…shall we get started then?" I responded awkwardly. After making sure everyone was here, we gave a brief overview of patrols, rounds, and responsibility. Surprisingly, Potter was more helpful than not. It looks like he's picked up a few tips from Remus.

"Okay, that's it for now everyone! We'll meet 2 weeks from today in the Heads Common Room at 7'o clock sharp. Don't be late" Potter concluded.

"Well done, Potter. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed" I addressed him once me, Remus, and him were the only ones left.

"Well, it's all thanks to M-Remus. If he hadn't told me what to do, I would've made a big fool of myself." Potter confessed sheepishly, taking me by surprise yet again. I expected him to be the same arrogant toerag he always was, gloating and showing off. Yet here he was, being modest for once and giving someone else the credit.

"Nevertheless, you did a great job. Well, now that the meeting's over, we should head back to our friends. Bye, Potter. Bye, Remus" I bid them adieu. However, once I stepped out of the compartment, someone grabbed my arm.

"Wait, Evans, not so fast" Potter commanded. I started panicking. Was he going to ask me out now? I braced myself for the question, ready with a smartass retort.

"What, Potter? If you're going to ask me out, the answer is still no!" I exclaimed.

"I wasn't going to ask that, Evans. Don't get ahead of yourself there. I was thinking, since we'll be working together a lot and sharing a dorm, don't you think we should start addressing each other by our first names?" he suggested. I considered it. It wasn't a bad idea, considering we'd be in close proximity and all.

"Sure thing, James"

"So Lily, you excited for your seventh and final year?" And thus began our first civil conversation. With James Potter as Head Boy and me as Head Girl, this year will sure be interesting.
