Edward quietly watched as his human took mindful sips of milk while her eyes read her math book.
Her brow puckered at a problem she wasn't familiar with. Fingertip following a line of directions, she scribbled on a blank sheet of paper the formula the example gave.
Once more, she took a stab at the problem and found herself smiling in victory when the answer came out with ease.
After a few moments, she sighed happily and put the book and notebook into her backpack and stretched. "Sorry about that. I had to get it done before tomorrow's test."
He inclined his head to the now hidden book. "Why do you care so much?"
At her confused expression, he elaborated. "Your school work. Since the moment you decided to become like me and my family, you've been thinking of things past-tense. But you still study like it matters."
Bella bit her bottom lip and looked down at the table. "Habit I guess."
"Bella" But she cut him off with the look of sadness.
"I just figured it keep me occupied. Take my mind off of things before graduation and all that fun-stressful stuff."
An eyebrow arched on his face, causing her to blush and babble. "I can't help it okay. I've been a bookworm since I was small. When I was five, I got a bad grade on my alphabets and demanded to make it up."
"At five?"
She nodded, though now she seemed a bit more embarrassed.
"This has nothing to do with becoming a vampire or Victoria."
Defeated, Bella sighed. "No."
"You simply don't like getting bad grades."
Again, she nodded in agreement as her face turned an even brighter red.
"Bella?"
Her eyes turned to him.
"Just an observation – you had three problems wrong on that paper."
