"Mikau! Guess what, man?" Japas the base guitarist of our band, the Indigo-Go's, said as he approached me. He didn't wait for my response. "Lulu's carrying!"
"Eggs!?"
"No, boxes you skullfish. Of course I mean eggs."
"Wow! That's great, man!" I could hardly believe it. I was happy for her, but I didn't know how to feel about her not telling me, her best friend, first, or at least in person.
That afternoon I was sitting cross-legged in Evan's room looking at some new music he'd written. "I wonder who's the father." He spoke so suddenly it caught me off guard.
"What do you mean?" Before he said it I never really thought about that. I just figured Lulu must be really happy and that's all that matters.
"Well, it takes two, ya know?" Well, I know for a fact that Lulu's been untouched. At least, until… Evan breaks my reverie to give his input. "She's not the type to just mate with anyone. It'd have to be someone she knows really well." He shot a glance my way. I had known he'd suspect me. Lulu and I are really close, everyone knows that. But it's not like that. Maybe.
"Dude, chill out. I didn't do anything." I get up and leave but bump into Lulu outside. This may sound unreasonable, but now that she's carrying eggs it seems like any small movement could hurt the unborn children. I can't help but stare at her stomach for any signs of them but it's still too early to tell. Her bluish cheeks tinge red when she notices my gaze.
"Sorry," I apologize sheepishly.
"It's alright. It is still a little weird getting used to the idea of…" Studying her face I can't help notice she avoids looking at me. Why? We've always been close.
"Lulu, is something wrong?" I touch her shoulder lightly and she shrugs away.
"I'm sorry Mikau, but I can't-" She slips past me without further explanation.
Lulu hasn't talked to me in so long. By now her eggs are almost fully grown in her stomach. I don't know all the details but I heard that there are a lot of eggs. What did I do? I have to find out. "Lulu! Lulu? What is it? Why are you crying?" I was surprised to find her like that when I got to her room.
"I have to tell you something Mikau. The eggs… they're yours. I'm so sorry. I wanted to tell you but-"
"Are you sure?" I interrupted, too shocked to think.
"Mikau, you're the only one I've been with. You have to have known."
"I know, it's just… a lot to take in. But Lulu, trust me, I'll do anything I can to help and I promise to protect you and the eggs."
