"Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying."

- Arthur C. Clarke

Authors Note: Hey guys so this is my XCOM Fanfic. Basically I'm retelling the story of XCOM: Enemy Within from the view of the soldiers. It will be about the fights, the struggle, the daily life and the relationships between them. I hope you like it :)

1. Intro

Josh was in a hurry. He told Anna to wait for him at the park and now he got stuck in a traffic jam. The young man's heart was beating really fast and his hands were sweating. He barely could grab the wheel without his hands slipping off. He wore his best suit, a necktie and shoes, which he polished so long that they were shining in the midday sun.

As he waited for the lights to turn green he opened once again his bag and looked for the little box. He took it out and opened it. The ring which it contained, had a big diamond on it. Josh saved every last penny he could spare, for the last two years so he could buy this exact ring. He was going to propose to Anna and he wanted to make it the best day of her life.

The lights turned green and the man turned in the lane to his right. He smiled. He and Anna were together for now exactly five years and he was looking forward to this moment. In the distance Josh could see the park. It was barely 5 minutes of driving. He didn't want to let Anna wait for him.

He passed the construction site which caused the traffic jam and stepped on the gas. His windshield crashed and his tires burst as something big crashed in the crossway right in front of him. The car turned over and all Josh could see was a mix of different colors and he felt an incredible pain as the shards of the windshield cut in his face and hands. When the car stopped he somehow managed to open his seatbelt. Josh opened the bent car door and crawled outside. He looked around and held his hurting head. What he saw was pure chaos.

Several other cars were pushed away and completely destroyed. The bottom was black from the explosion the object caused and here and there were little fires and pieces of the street lay around. One car was even burning. As Josh's view was clear again he looked up and inspected the object which now lay exactly in the middle of the crossway. It was a big metallic box with weird patterns on it. It looked a little bit like a giant insect. It wasn't taller than Josh himself but apparently still big enough to cause that much damage. Josh slowly walked towards the thing, when the four sites of the box opened and something streamed out of it.

It was some kind of green fog, but it looked almost alive. As if the smoke formed long tentacles which were twitching around. He reached out for one of the tentacles when it soared forward and grabbed his arm. Josh screamed in surprise as it grabbed him tighter and suddenly pulled him towards the metal box. He turned around and his eyes caught sight of something extremely shiny. It was the ring he bought for Anna, laying on the ground surrounded by shards and dirt. A tear rolled down his cheek as he thought of Anna. He heard the screaming of the people around as the tentacles emerged farther and grabbed several other people pulling them towards the box. Josh closed his eyes. A picture of Anna flashed in his head. It was the last thing that he would see.

So I didn't have much time today but I will definitely continue writing this story (especially if you liked what you've read so far). I have so many ideas and I'm really looking forward to writing it. Please let me know if you liked it!
