Beneath The Oak Trees

Hello reader! This drabble/oneshot was written for the IB4Y community at Livejournal. The prompt was the famous phrase by Gaius Iulius Caesar: "Veni, Vidi, Vici." (I came, I saw, I conquered) - 500-750 Words, but I only used 553. It was published on August 22nd 2011.

Hope you like it!

I came.

To a small café, where I wanted to spend my lunch hour in peace. I had just made an annoying phone call and that man's high pitched voice was still ringing in my ears. And yet, I chose a café I knew to be packed with people hanging on their cell phones, or hammering onto their keyboards. But the majestic oak trees invited me to spend some time underneath their viridian crowns and I did not refuse. Instead, I blanked the constant clicking and the occasional faked laughter out, as I made my way through the aisles. Then.

I saw.

Her. In the rearmost corner of the café sat a young woman. Her slender legs crossed, her nose almost touched the notebook she was eagerly writing in, risking that her glasses would fall off any second. Then she suddenly halted and used her hands to count something, as she voiced something with her mouth. I was already standing in front of her and I could hear that she wasn't actually speaking. Naturally, I was more interested in the content of her blouse than the content of her lines. She was a pretty girl, even if she seemed to be the odd one out.

The black haired girl blinked at me, as I sat down opposite to her. Yet when I put on my most winning smile, she averted her gaze and tried to hide her furious blush behind a large textbook she had quickly produced from her handbag. 'A Beginner's Guide to Roman History' it said on the cover. I leaned back into my chair. Smart women were even easier to bewitch than women with the nous of a pea.

"So, you are interested in Roman history? I happen to have studied a few semesters myself."

She finally looked up from her book. "You have?" she asked shyly.

"Yes," I lied. "I am Sesshomaru and you are…?"

"Kagome. I-I've just started," she replied.

"Well, Kagome, have you heard of Apuleius then?"

She frowned for a second and then nodded. "I think, I do. He wrote that fairy tale novel, didn't he?"

I smiled. Good girl. "Then you have heard of 'The Tale of Amour and Psyche', too?"

Ah yes, she had. She averted her gaze yet again, only that this time the blush had crept from her face down towards her collarbone. And it probably went even further down. What a sweet girl, so young, so innocent, so delicious. Exactly the way I prefer women of any kind. I have no use for those who already gave themselves away to other men. I have no use for other men's leftovers.

The girl began to shift nervously around on her chair, mumbling incomprehensibly. I sighed and leaned forward, locking her eyes with my own. Her eyes widened and she gasped. Then, she also leaned forward, so that she could have a better look.

"Your eyes… They are golden!" she whispered.

"You are quite perceptive," I chuckled. "You see, I am… unique. In more than just one way."

She nodded and beamed at me, but she really had no idea, whom, or rather what, she was facing. If she had known, she would have fled. Of course, resistance would have been futile. But she did not know. And therefore, that night.

I conquered.
