A/N: Just a little muse that bit me so I wrote this. Been doing a lot of POTC one-shots lately.

Disclaimer: I do not own Pirates of the Caribbean.

Captain

William Turner once asked me a very stupid question. While I was drunk, no less.

He asked me why it was so important that I have people call me 'Captain'. Well, I thought about it as I gulped my rum, though my thoughts were fuzzy due to alcohol.

"Here's the thing, boy," I told him, trying to keep my words from slurring too badly, "When you become Captain of a ship, everyone calls you Captain, you see? And once everyone calls you Captain because you are Captain you get used to being called Captain, so it becomes a habit to hear yourself being referred to as Captain, savvy?"

Apparently this wasn't a good enough answer for him, because he asked the question again.

So I told him. Sort of.

"Pride, m'boy, pride. Always pride. Life's nothing without pride. Well, actually, life is nothing without rum, but pride...well, pride's a different thing. If it makes you proud to do a certain thing, you do it because you're proud of the ability to do it, right? Now if it makes you proud to be called a certain thing, you naturally want to be called that certain thing because it makes you feel good."

That answer seemed to satisfy him. At least I didn't have to tell him the entire truth. Bloody questions! Why the questions? I ask questions all the time, but mostly I don't need answers...

Bloody hell, where's the rest of my rum?
