I walked down the hallway after talking with Major Monogram. As soon as I stepped into the office division I could hear whispers.
"I hear the reason Agent P doesn't talk is because he's mute," Devin the duck.
"I heard he's dumb" Garry the gander. And after I rescued him.
"Guys leave him alone" Thank you Pinky.
It was true. I never have spoken a word. I'll do a silly chatter noise that doesn't mean anything. Or if I'm talking to one of the agents I'll use a keyboard or pen and paper. I wasn't mute or dumb. No I was just keeping a secret. It's hard to get a job at the agency when you're a female because they think you're weak so I Agent P or Perry or Perry the platypus was a girl or as far as they knew a boy. Underneath my fedora most of the time I wore a cream colored flower.
Peter the panda who had somehow figured out that I was a girl came up to me.
"Hey Perry did you hear about the agency party?"
I shook my head and Peter rolled his eyes. He grabbed my arm and pulled me to an empty hallway.
"Are you going?"
I smiled slightly, "I'm not sure if I will or not. I mean it's not like I can talk to anybody."
Peter smiled, "It's a karaoke party. It would be the perfect chance for you to let everyone know."
"How?"
"With a song. As far as they know you're Mr. Rough and tough agent P. They wouldn't be expecting you to go up and sing. You could set them straight and Major wouldn't know a thing."
I laughed, "I don't know I mean last party I went to where the agency was Monogram was videotaping is butt."
"Yeah that was a nightmare. No he's not coming this time. All it would sound like to him would be animal noises."
I smiled again, "Sure I guess I could do it."
Peter smiled and gave me a large panda sized hug. Well the guy sure did try you could give him that.
After Devin the duck finished his song and it looked like no one else was going to sing I went up on stage and took the microphone. The agents started to move around and I knew they were going to start catcalling.
"What are you going to do Agent P chatter?" There it is.
That one got a few laughs.
I smiled nervously which actually threw everyone off guard and raised my hand slightly. Peter who was the DJ turned on the guitar music that went with it.
"I've always been the kind of girl that hid my face.
So afraid to tell the world what I've got to say,
but I have this dream right inside of me
I'm gonna let it show it's time to let you know.
This is real,
this is me,
I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be now.
Gonna let the light shine on me.
Now I've found who I am,
there's no way to hold it in.
No more hiding who I wanna be.
This is me.
Do you know what it's like
to feel so in the dark.
To dream about a life
where you're the shining star.
Even though it seems like it's too far away
I have to believe in myself it's the only way.
This is real
this is me
I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be now.
Gonna let the light shine on me.
Now I've found who I am
there's no way to hold it in.
No more hiding who I wanna be.
This is me."
I stopped singing and looked at Peter. I set down the microphone.
"I can't do this."
With that I ran off the stage and then outside heading towards my home. Where hopefully my owner wouldn't notice I was crying.
