It all started as a simple dream. He joined Slade, and then told his team everything he knew. They defeated Slade, and the city held a parade in their honor; in his honor.
He woke up; disappointed to learn that it was only a dream. That's when he got the great idea of playing spy; just like his heroes from the movies he spent so much time watching. He would join Slade, then find a way to get information to the rest of the team; the team would finally notice when he wasn't there and would appreciate his bravery in the end. He would be a hero; he would go down in Titans history. This was the best way to prove he deserved to be a Teen Titan. The best way to prove he belonged with the rest of the heroes.
So he put himself in Slade's grip, he sacrificed everything to take Slade down. He staged a fake fight (fake to him, not the others), went to Slade with his story, and Slade took him in. He was taught better fighting forms, better strategies; he became a better person.
One night he remembered how his former leader couldn't get in touch with the Tower no matter how hard he tried, and let's face it, he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. But he had grown; he wasn't the same changeling that the world had once known. He would find a way to tell them everything he had learned about the masked man (which was everything there was to know).
Only, over the long course of his time with the criminal, as a criminal, he never told them any information, which made him a bad spy, and an even worse Titan.
