WHISPER AND SIGH

She is a whisper and a sigh, softly …her hands like air, barely touching. Skimming over him, making his skin hum.

That is how he will remember the moment all this …his new world shattered to bits by the sound of a shot.

No coming back from a wound like this, he knows. Seen it often enough. He is an expert on pain, on suffering …how to deal it out and divide it, no matter how much he might hate himself for it. Guilt was a concept she understood, carrying enough baggage herself …enough for the both of them.

There is nothing left and yet he wishes he could hold on to her last breath and at the same time wishes they had never met. Had she missed the plane, had the attendant been to annoyed with the bitchy blonde ….had she been told to stay……anything …..anything…

They would have never met. She would still be alive.

If he had held her a little tighter, if he had not let her go …..

She is light like laughter travelling on the breeze. Her lips taste salty sweet, of seawater and mangos and other exotic things. She giggles and sighs and murmurs sweet nothings, she is so alive. Her hands move over him like cool air. They too should be hot ..like everything on this island. But they are not.

He watches her watching him…amazed. Watches her move above him with that half bashful, half womanly seductive smile on her face. Feels her sway with his body like the ocean, in time with the waves rolling ashore. They way she bites her lip, the way her eyes shine. He'd known then….known what he felt was more than a passing infatuation, two strangers drawn together by circumstance. He'd wanted to tell her that, but it seemed too cliché.

The trees seem to whisper her name now …here in the pouring rain. Where there is nothing to do, nothing to stop that light dying in her eyes. He can feel her blood running over his legs, precious crimson…mingling with the rain. He was the last thing she saw, her eyes so wide, her face so confused. She is a whisper and a sigh….so light in his arms, almost weightless, boneless…..

He had promised not to leave, only to see her go …..slipping away, like rain running through his hands. When they had just began to heal each other, most unlikely companions and yet …

I love you, Shannon.

This pain is beyond anything he could have done in his darkest hour. He thought he'd seen it, found it in the sands of the desert, buried it there too. Only too find it here in the jungle ….

One shot was all it took to shatter the fragile peace…

She is a whisper and a sigh…..
