As I walked through the woods with my bow in hand, my eyes searching for anything alive, I noticed it being unusually quiet. I brushed it off though, I had enough to worry about. The snow crunching under my feet, I heard a snap. I grabbed an arrow and had my weapon loaded faster than light, I ran towards the nearest tree and leaned against it. I was wearing my fathers hunting jacket and brown pants, so I blend in with the trees. My hat covered my whole face except my eyes. I snuck a glance behind the tree and noticed a turkey nibbling on the twig it stepped on. I was about to shot the animal when it dropped dead with an arrow sticking out of it's neck. Suddenly, realization dawned on me. I wasn't supposed to be walking in the woods, let alone hunting. I would be dead by morning if I were to be found. I couldn't do that to my mother, or sister Prim. We lost my father in a mining accident, who know what'll happen to me if Peacekeepers found me.
As fast as I could, I put back my arrow and started to climb the tree. When I was a good distance up, where I wouldn't be seen, but I could watch down below, I stopped to examine the turkey. Perfect shot with a tightened bow. Feathers balanced equally on each side. Hit right between- my thoughts cut short when I heard the crunching of the snow below. There, emerged a boy about my age. He looked familiar, but I couldn't place it. His shiny blonde hair sparked in the sunlight, his face was like a work of art. But what really got me where his eyes. They were the colour of the sky. Blue. They were so focused, so beautiful, that I felt myself being lost in them. He had his bow loaded and was looking around like he heard something. When he seemed satisfied that there was no one around, he put back his arrow and dropped his bow to the side. He pulled out a rope and tied the animals neck on one end, and the other to his belt, He got up, pulled the arrow out of it's neck, grabbed his bow and left.
I jumped out of the tree, and stared at the stop where he just left. The crunching of the snow did not come to my ears, only when I heard his voice
.
"Who are you?" His voice ran to my ears as I jumped and out of a reflex grabbed an arrow and pointed it towards the direction of the voice. When I saw that it was the boy who shot the turkey, I didn't relax.
"What do you want?" I asked in the bravest tone I could manage
"I asked you first" He said. His voice was so sweet, so pure. But I pushed the emotion aside. I learned to do that when my father died.
"I asked you second" I said, smirking. I narrowed my eyes at him when I saw him looking at them. People usually recognized me by my eyes. That wasn't good. I then noticed that he didn't have his bow loaded, or a knife or anything, I took the chance.
"I'll give you 5 seconds to leave now and forget that you saw me today, or I'll shoot. And I'll do the same." My voice rang out. He smirked and looked at the ground. "Do you not believe me?"
"No, I believe you, I've seen you shoot, you have quite an aim" I'm sure my eyes showed confusion, so he continued, "you come out here often, as do I. I completely believe that you will shoot me, so I'll go, goodbye." With a final smile, he left, only leaving his footprints in the snow behind.
