Gibbs stared down at his cell phone in stunned amazement. Normally, he regarded the little ringing box as little more than an electronic leash. Sure, it could be useful when he was working. It allowed them to get leads and information far more quickly than they could back in the old days. For the most part though it was annoying in the extreme. It allowed people to find him when he did not want to be bothered. It also often refused to work like he wanted it to, and he had neither the time nor the patience to figure it out. That's what people like McGee and Abby were good for.
Sometimes though the capability of all this new technology just amazed him. Just think, if they'd had something like this when Shannon and Kelly were alive, he could have actually seen them rather than just hearing them on the tape. He cut that thought off abruptly. There was no point in dwelling on the past. That was a long time ago, and he was much better off concentrating on the here and now. To distract himself, he pressed the button on the phone and played the video again.
Leigh and Katie grinned back at him from the screen. They were two and a half now and were finally beginning to resemble little people rather than chubby babies. They huddled together on the tiny screen, two tiny, grinning imps in footed pajamas. Leigh's were green, and her hair was still gathered in the bedraggled remnants of what had been pigtails at some point today. By contrast, Katie was neat as a pin, standing beside Leigh in pink pajamas with her hair flowing loose to just past her shoulders.
"Ready?" he heard Abby say in the background. "What do you want to tell him?"
"We love you this much," the twins chorused, flinging their arms wide.
Leigh was so enthusiastic that her flinging arm bonked Katie in the head. Katie stumbled, landing on her bottom and starting to cry.
The video wobbled and went out of focus. He heard Abby say, "Oh, Katie," before the video abruptly ended and the screen went blank. Gibbs grinned, chuckling as he tucked his phone carefully back in his pocket. Yep, sometimes technology was just amazing.
