My Dearest Love

"I'm afraid I don't have anymore idea of what he's up to than you do. But you know how hard it was for him."

"I hope poor Bella will be okay. I'm sure this was very hard on her as well."

Edward Cullen shook his head to clear it of his family's voices. He couldn't take it anymore. Standing in the middle of the meadow, illuminated by the full moon's light, he needed to see her. To know he had done the right thing. He wasn't sure. How could 'the right thing' hurt so much? Facing the direction of her house, he took a step, then hesitated. If he went all the way to her house, if he saw her, smelt her, would he be able to resist going back? Even if he saw it had been 'the right thing' to do?

Reaching into his pocket, Edward pulled out a small, folded piece of paper. He opened it, but did not need to look to know what was written in his own, flowing script. Going over the words again in his mind, he realized he wouldn't be able to see her again. If he did, he knew he would end up staying, but if he left her this…

No. It's better not to try to contact her. A clean break is best. She can't know that... That I still love her.

Crumpling the note, Edward turned his gaze skyward. The distant sound of rushing air alerted him to someone's approach. Edward turned, allowing the piece of paper to fall to the ground.

Jasper emerged a few moments later.

"Esme was worried. Are you coming with us, or are you…"

"I need to go my own way for a little while."

Jasper nodded, then moved to stand beside Edward. Silently, he put a hand on his brother's shoulder and squeezed. Edward returned the nod, coal black eyes vacant. Then he took off at a run, racing towards nowhere in particular.

Sighing, Jasper watched his brother go. Turning to leave, he noticed a small piece of crumpled paper at his feet. Picking it up, he smoothed it out and read:

My dearest love,

The hardest thing I have ever done, my lamb,

was give you up.

You were my light, my sun, my warmth,

and Especially my happiness.

and I loved you,

with all my heart.

The strongest thing I can be, my lamb,

is your protector.

I won't let anyone hurt you

Especially not this lion.

Because I love you,

with all my heart.

The best thing you could do, my lamb,

is forget me.

It will be hard, but you can be happy, and safe.

Especially safe,

but I will love you,

with all my heart,

for all eternity.
