At Last I Sail

Legolas Greenleaf, long under tree,
In joy I have lived. Now I sail the Sea!
Long ago I heard the white gulls calling,
And long have I desired to see the long waves falling.
But ever friendship bade me delay,
Delay the lure of the Sea's fresh, salty spray.
Now the Fellowship is gone,
Broken, passed away, and done.
Two of us now remain: the Dwarf and I,
As different as day and night.
He comes with me to answer the call;
For Valinor he has left his mountain hall.
No longer can I stay on the shores of my birth,
No more can I wander the paths of Middle-earth.
My kindred beckon from across the Sea,
And I reply, restless, eagerly.
And now a grey-rain curtain is moving away,
Revealing white shores, and trees that sway
In a breeze so gentle, so light.
My smile is broad as I share Gimli's delight.
A far green country I see in the distance
And beyond, a sunrise, clean and swift.
I have answered at last the call of the Sea,
And at last I have answered the longing within me.
