Perception

She keeps her distance and watches quietly from the corner. She notices his eyes soften and knows that another fleeting moment has arrived. She counts the seconds in which it takes him to even out his breathing and settle his eyes calmly on her. "It's all a matter of perception, Caroline."

She's learned not to say anything anymore. As long as he does not die, she is doing her job well.

"You look at us and see our sins. There's nothing complex about it. You serve us up on a platter to a world that sees only black and white," he coughs painfully and closes his eyes for a few seconds. She almost stands up to check on him before his eyes pop open once again. "We kill, therefore we are bad. However, for you?"

A humorless laugh escapes his lips and she wonders what happened to his sweet promises of adventure and escape.

"For you, the almighty fighters of the light – you are living in a rainbow colored world that offers infinite sides. You kill, however you kill to save. Therefore, you are good. You feed, however you compel them to forget and feed them your blood in order for survival. Therefore, you are just."

"Klaus –"

A cry of anguish escapes his lips and his knees come crashing down the floor. A thousand year old rule is crumbling down before her very eyes. He begins to beg, to plead, to weep for the sweet death that continues to elude him for centuries.

Just like that, the moment is gone. And as always, she manages to turn the other cheek and ignore the inevitable truth that her group so often runs away from.

Author's Note: Just a drabble on what may or may not happen on Thursday's episode. It just irks me how Elena and the rest of them (yes, including Caroline though I love her and Klaroline so very much. It's accepting the flaws that make me the ultimate fan) think they're all high and mighty. They are not. I hope they see that soon enough. Otherwise, yo, Julie Plec, Im'ma come for you.
